I like to 5 minute vacations where I close my eyes & simply recall a beautiful place I’ve visited. This creates a nice peaceful respite from whatever noise or commotion might be surrounding me. My newest mini vacay is laying in the hammock I put up in my daughter’s backyard- it’s in the shade and we face a a beautiful floral vine. Now the whole family comes outside taking their turn for a peaceful break from their busy &/or challenging day. And as inviting and beautiful and tempting as that beautiful lake in WA is - we don’t have to drive or fly a million miles to experience a truly peaceful moment in time. (I would love to do that trip sometime- thanks for the deets!)
Very well said and expressive of how I personally choose to live as much as I can. I certainly see no reason to center my life on chasing ephemeral satisfactions.
This part of the country is magical, you're right. We've lived out here for just three years and are only scratching the surface. Good luck on planning your own trip, Jon!
Kevin, an honest introspection is all we need to reach to our core, and I agree that that is only possible when we are free from our FOMO and are away from all the distractions that life throws at us in an unending cycle. One should do whatever and go wherever that makes it possible, alas a very little price yet how many of us think that way….a welcome reminder dear👍
Fear is almost always the only thing holding me (and everyone!) back. The wild reminds me of the truth. And you're right: whatever it takes. Freedom is worth doing what it takes to experience it.
Gorgeous photos from what sounds like an amazing trip. There is something incredible about having one’s butt on the water.
I was listening to an interview with David Brooks author of The Road to Character, and he speaks about resume greatness versus eulogy greatness. The first often stresses us out completely, the second is about living according to what matters to us most.
You might not have your first name remembered, but I can guarantee that by living with integrity, and acting with kindness, your life will have ripples out to everyone you meet, and all your descendants.
Thanks Teyani, both for the encouragement and the reminder. I love David Brooks. He's a modern statesman, in my opinion. What you said about ripples struck me: that image has been in my mind ever since the trip. Even the tiniest ripple travels a long way and has its unique place in the whole and as a reflection of it. I have a feeling I'll be reflecting on that for awhile. Thank you.
I tend to live my life with the JOMO mentality and lately I to have been pondering this whole issue of leaving my mark on the earth (so to speak).
I once heard a very wise man say that the cemetery was one of the richest places on earth as a result of unfulfilled potential. He went on to say that the cemetery was filled with so many books that never got written, so many businesses that were never started etc. So it got me thinking... I want to do as much as I can with what I have to make an impact.
And then all of a sudden I was faced with the realization that time is elusive!😄
I truly enjoyed reading your article. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for reading it, Emma. I love the way you think, by the way. I'm of the opinion that our life's deepest calling or purpose isn't an accomplishment, vocation, or mission. It is simply to be/become ourselves. We are a verb as much as we are a noun, so the actions we take are the natural, spontaneous expression of our soul. The most impact we can have in this world comes from being most authentically ourselves, which both takes a lifetime and happens in the moment. Sounds like that's a truth you've discovered. : )
Haha, I'd like to think that I'm a work in progress, but yes indeed. Thank you so much for your kind words. P.S. I really love your perspective on us being verbs as much as we are nouns. Very insightful! I look forward to reading more of your writing, Kevin. Cheers!😊
Another wonderful post - and thank you for sharing the beautiful photos of the trip. It must have been awesome.
Many years ago I lived in Vancouver, BC, on Canada's west coast and I miss being that close to such incredible natural beauty (which is sometimes best seen from a kayak on the water).
I live 3 provinces east now (in Manitoba) and there are many beautiful places here - but there's nothing like the pacific northwest.
This is so insightful.. Clarifying further my desire to find space with my thoughts.. To understand the path I've been trying to understand since childhood.. To find the connect to who I am, the pleasesure and support I have found in “asking the neighbours “ ..and been given that help when needed. All which I'm learning, is giving me the peace I wanted, conformation that I wasn't alone, in thought. Thank you ❤️🕊️

I agree 100%, Wendy. Peace exists and can be enjoyed wherever we are. Makes me want to buy a hammock now. ; )

The world needs more people like you, Kiran, who live from what's essential to them. So glad this connected with you.
What a trip. The PNW truly is a magical place
Great read and glad to hear you cleared your mind.
Now to plan a trip of my own 🗻

I suspect that you touch more lives than you could even imagine.
I share this sentiment on many levels...

Beautiful photos Kevin.
I have embraced JOMO for many years particularly as my name is included in the acronym. 😊
May you continue to bring back the peace and insights of your trip to your daily life.
Thanks Jo! It's inspiring to see your journey unfolding.

Seeing the pics are making me relive the experience all over again. What a gift that time was! I’m already ready for the next round of JOMO!
Beautiful post!
